What makes a gemstone valuable is rarely one thing. When a gemstone changes hands, a valuation report changes hands with it, built on quality factors: assessable characteristics that gemologists use to describe, compare, and price coloured stones. This guide covers the three most visually apparent: colour, clarity, and cut. Part two covers carat weight, origin, and treatments.

Why Quality Factors Matter

Gemstones are not regulated the way financial markets are. There is no universal grading authority for coloured stones, and even diamond grading varies meaningfully between laboratories. What quality factors provide is a shared language: one that lets a buyer in Singapore understand what a seller in Jaipur is describing, and what a gemologist has documented in a report.

For collectors, that language does two things. It gives you the tools to assess what you are looking at without relying entirely on the seller’s word. And it explains why two stones that look almost identical to the naked eye can differ dramatically in price.

1. Colour

Colour is the single most important quality factor for most coloured gemstones, often accounting for more than half of assessed value. It is not a single measurement but a combination of three components: hue, tone, and saturation.

Hue

Hue is the basic colour family: red, blue, green, orange, yellow, or combinations of these. In practice, almost no gemstone is a pure single hue. A ruby might carry a secondary hue of purple or orange; a sapphire might lean slightly violet or greenish. The primary hue dominates; secondary hues are called modifiers. Some modifiers are desirable and others reduce value. In blue sapphires, a slight violet secondary is generally welcomed. A greenish secondary reduces value considerably.

Tone

Tone describes lightness or darkness, from colourless to black. The ideal for most coloured gems sits in the medium to medium-dark range: dark enough to show depth, light enough that colour is not lost in shadow. A sapphire that is too dark appears nearly black under certain lighting. One that is too light reads as washed out.

Saturation

Saturation is the intensity of the colour: the degree to which it is free from grey or brown. High saturation produces vivid, pure colour. Low saturation produces something muted or muddy. The most prized stones combine ideal tone with high saturation: the pigeon’s blood red of a Burmese ruby, the royal blue of a Ceylon sapphire, the vivid green of a Colombian emerald.

Colour Zoning

Colour in gemstones is not always uniform. Many stones show colour zoning: bands or patches of stronger or weaker colour reflecting the conditions in which the crystal grew. In watermelon tourmaline, zoning is part of the stone’s identity. In sapphire, uneven zoning visible through the crown reduces value. How the cutter orients the rough is partly an exercise in managing this.

2. Clarity

Clarity refers to how free a gemstone is from internal inclusions and external blemishes. Inclusions are features inside the stone: crystals of other minerals, liquid-filled cavities, fractures, or clouds of tiny bubbles. Blemishes are surface features: scratches, chips, or natural surface irregularities.

Inclusions Are Not Always a Problem

In diamonds, any inclusion reduces value on a standardised scale. In coloured gemstones, the relationship is more nuanced.

Different species have different expectations. Emeralds almost always contain inclusions; the trade uses the French word jardin (garden) to describe this internal landscape as a characteristic rather than a flaw. A clean emerald is genuinely rare. Aquamarine and topaz, by contrast, are expected to be eye-clean, and inclusions in those stones do reduce value more directly.

Some inclusions actively add value. The fine rutile needles inside a star sapphire or star ruby are inclusions: they create the asterism effect the stone is prized for. Inclusions that generate optical phenomena are not defects; they are the point.

GIA Clarity Type Classifications

The Gemological Institute of America classifies coloured gems into three clarity types. Type I gems (aquamarine, blue topaz, citrine) are typically inclusion-free and expected to be eye-clean. Type II gems (corundum, garnet, spinel) typically show some inclusions and are graded accordingly. Type III gems (emerald, red tourmaline, tsavorite) almost always contain inclusions, and clarity is assessed relative to others of the same species. Knowing which type a gem belongs to is essential context for reading any clarity assessment.

3. Cut

Cut is the only quality factor that results entirely from human decisions. Every other factor comes from geology; cut comes from craft. It covers the shape of the finished stone, the faceting style, the proportions, the symmetry, and the polish.

Cut Styles

The main cut styles for coloured gemstones are the brilliant cut (facets designed to maximise light return and sparkle), the step cut (parallel rectangular facets, as in an emerald cut, that emphasise colour and clarity over sparkle), the mixed cut (brilliant crown, step pavilion, common in commercial production), and the cabochon (a polished dome with no facets, used for opaque stones, heavily included material, and stones with optical phenomena). Rose cuts and briolettes appear in antique and designer pieces.

Proportions and Light Performance

Proportions govern how light behaves inside the stone. A pavilion that is too shallow causes light to pass straight through the base, producing a windowed appearance: a washed-out transparent zone visible through the table. A pavilion that is too deep traps light and produces dark extinction areas. A well-proportioned stone shows even, bright colour across the face-up view.

There is no universal proportions standard for coloured gemstones the way GIA has formalised one for round brilliant diamonds. Cutters make individual judgements based on the rough: maximising yield, managing colour distribution, and accepting trade-offs. Assess cut by looking at the stone face-up: is the colour even? Is it bright? Are there distracting dark areas?

Why Cut Quality Varies

Commercial cutting centres in Jaipur, Bangkok, and Idar-Oberstein produce stones across a wide quality range. At the commercial end, cutters are often paid by finished carat weight, which creates an incentive to cut slightly too deep rather than lose material to better proportions. Premium custom cutting prioritises optical performance and may sacrifice 10 to 20 percent of the rough to achieve it. The face-up difference can be considerable.

What Comes Next
