Our trained gemmologist will bring you through the gemstone pipeline by showing and explaining the exhibits in our six special showcases. You will also get a hands-on experience with gem materials.
The six main exhibits are:
Gem Crystals
Learn about the origin of gemstones – how minerals can be formed in various ways in nature, e.g. through crystallization from molten magma and gases in the earth’s interior or from volcanic lava streams that reach the earth’s surface.
Be enlightened by the seven known crystal systems in which nearly all minerals grow: cubic, tetragonal, hexagonal, trigonal, orthorombic, monoclinic and triclinic systems.
Organic Gemstones
On display are a variety of organic gemstones such as coral, ivory, pearl and amber.
These gemstones are of organic origin, but they possess the quality and characteristics of stones.
Phenomenal Gems
Phenomenal gemstones possess striking optical effects, making them truly a sight for sore eyes.
Learn about the unique characteristics of such gemstones such as asterism or a “star-like” appearance in rubies and sapphires; adularescence or a scattering of light that is found in moonstone; and the play of colour effect in opals.
Rare and Unusual Gems
In our wide collection is a group of lesser known gemstones such as fluorite, moldavite, calcite, heckmanite, quartz tiger’s eye and many others.
Come and see these rare and unusual gemstones, many of which are prized by collectors from all over the world.
Imitation Materials
In a world where more imitation materials are being passed off as high quality gemstones, it is advisable to learn how to spot a fake.
We have a collection of imitation materials to enlighten visitors so that they can buy with greater confidence.
Synthetic Materials
Many industries such as the luxury watch companies make use of synthetic gem materials to build their products.
Come and view a variety of synthetic gemstones and learn about their different manufacturing processes.
